Researchers from Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, and University College Cork are seeking assistance to determine the beliefs and knowledge of the public concerning AI and software as a whole.
Dr. Sarah Robinson, a psychologist and senior postdoctoral researcher with Lero, is inviting members of the public to participate in an anonymous online survey that takes approximately ten minutes to complete. The survey aims to identify people’s hopes and concerns regarding AI and software in general.
While experts engage in debates on AI, little attention has been given to public opinion, despite the ongoing and heated discussions. Some AI experts express concern that others prioritize imagined apocalyptic scenarios over immediate issues, such as the presence of racist and sexist biases in machine programming. Dr. Robinson highlights that human rights abuses have already occurred through the use of AI and facial recognition software. Research by Dr. Abeba Birhane, a colleague at Lero, and others has revealed instances where data used to train AI systems was contaminated with racist and misogynistic language.
