Anxiety disorders are a class of mental health conditions characterized by feelings of intense fear or apprehension. These emotions can range from mild to severe and often interfere with daily functioning, including work, school, and everyday activities. Anxiety disorders include specific phobias, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms vary widely among the different types of anxiety disorders but may include excessive worry or fear; restlessness; difficulty concentrating; feeling on edge; irritability; muscle tension or trembling; sleep disturbances including insomnia; fatigue; palpitations or rapid heart rate.

The exact causes of these various forms of anxiety remain unknown but they appear to be connected to both environmental factors such as life events and genetics. Furthermore research suggests that some individuals have an increased sensitivity to perceived threats which could lead to more severe symptoms than may generally be seen in other people experiencing similar levels of stress. Psychological treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) have been found effective for treating most forms of the condition while medication can also help reduce the severity of symptoms in some cases. It is important for those suffering from any type of anxiety disorder seek professional medical help in order to find an appropriate treatment plan tailored specifically for them as well as support from family members and friends throughout their recovery process if necessary.
