Australian Institute Of Marine Science

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is a world-leading marine science research organisation. With more than 60 years’ experience, AIMS has been at the forefront of scientific discovery in the oceans around Australia, making a significant contribution to our understanding of marine life and ecosystems.

AIMS is an independent Commonwealth Government institute with over 200 full-time equivalent staff based in Townsville, Queensland, Darwin, Northern Territory and Perth, Western Australia. Our research programs span all three tropical regions of Australia: the Indo-Pacific, Coral Sea and Southern Ocean.

We are internationally recognised for our excellence in tropical marine science and our unique position within Australia allows us to focus on tropical issues that are globally relevant. Our focus on the tropics also allows us to play a leading role in developing solutions to some of the major challenges facing coral reefs including climate change and Crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks.

Our vision is “to be recognised as one of the world’s best institutes for integrated marine science that delivers outstanding outcomes for society” and our mission is “to generate new knowledge about oceans through excellent science to support sustainable development of coastal & marine resources & environments” . We work towards these by undertaking excellent science that delivers real impact for industry, decision makers and communities; being leaders in collaborative research; investing in people and infrastructure; nurturing strong relationships; embracing innovation; communicating effectively; and operating with integrity.

AIMS was established under the CSIRO Act 1989 as a statutory corporation with independence similar to that of the CSIRO. This means we have a governing Council which provides strategic direction while an Executive Management Team led by our Chief Executive Officer implements this strategy within operational guidelines determined by government policy from time to time. Underpinning all we do is a robust business planning process which includes an annual budget submission to government as well as 5 year Research Infrastructure Plans detailing how we will maintain or enhance key capabilities necessary for delivery of our strategic vision and objectives
