Autoimmune Disorders

by Liam O'Connor

The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from infection. The body’s ability to fight off infections is complicated, and sometimes the immune system can mistake healthy cells for foreign invaders. When this happens, it can attack and damage healthy tissue. This type of reaction is called an autoimmune reaction.

Autoimmune reactions can be caused by a number of factors, including infections, medications, stress, and changes in hormones. They can also be genetic. Autoimmune diseases are more common in women than men and usually develop during adulthood.

There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases, each with its own set of symptoms. Some common symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches, rashes, and fever. Many people with autoimmune diseases also have problems with their digestive system or thyroid gland.

Some autoimmune diseases are mild and only require occasional treatment; however others can be life-threatening. There is no cure for most autoimmune diseases; however treatments are available that can help manage the symptoms and prevent further damage to the body’s tissues.
