Broad Institute

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is a biomedical research institute that focuses on the genomic basis of disease. The institute is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with additional campuses in Boston and San Francisco.

The Broad Institute was founded in 2004 by a group of scientists from Harvard and MIT, including George Church, Eric Lander, and Todd Golub. The institute has been instrumental in sequencing the genomes of humans, rats, chickens, fruit flies, mosquitoes, and other organisms. In addition to genomic sequencing, the Broad Institute’s research includes studies of the genetic basis of cancer, infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and cardiovascular diseases.

The Broad Institute is home to several thousand scientists from around the world who work together to advance biomedical research. The institute also houses several core facilities that provide support for its research programs. These facilities include a genomics platform that provides DNA sequencing services; a bioinformatics platform that develops software tools for analyzing genomic data; and a cell culture facility that supports the growth of cells for use in experiments.
