Brookhaven National Laboratory

Founded in 1947, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory located in Upton, New York, on Long Island. Its name stems from its location within the Town of Brookhaven. BNL’s primary mission is basic and applied scientific research. With about 3,000 scientists, engineers and support staff, the lab is currently home to 28 Nobel laureates who have worked or are working here.

The 5300-acre (21 km2) campus contains several large research facilities including the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and National Synchrotron Light Source II. Seven Nobel prizes have been awarded for work conducted at Brookhaven Lab. BNL operates its own police department and hosts a number of tenant organizations that carry out their own missions on site.
