The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for the military. DARPA was created in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, and its mission is “to maintain the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent technological surprise from another nation.”
DARPA is responsible for the development of many technologies that have been adopted by the military and civilian sectors, including GPS, stealth aircraft, and drones. The agency also funds research into artificial intelligence, robotics, and other cutting-edge technologies with potential military applications.
DARPA has been criticized for its involvement in controversial projects such as Project MKUltra, a mind control program conducted during the Cold War; however, it has also been praised for its role in developing life-saving technologies such as Kevlar body armor and prosthetic limbs.
With a budget of over $3 billion per year, DARPA is one of the largest funders of research and development in the world.
