Dartmouth College is a private research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. Founded in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Although founded as a school to train Native Americans for Christian ministry, Dartmouth primarily provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the liberal arts and sciences. It has three schools: Arts and Sciences, Thayer School of Engineering, and Tuck School of Business; Gehry Partners designed its new business school complex. The university also operates two farms: the organic King Arthur Flour Bakery Café on campus and an agricultural center at nearby Hopewell Farm.

Dartmouth enrolls about 6,300 students from across the United States and more than 70 countries. Undergraduate students can choose from 56 majors offered through the Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering, Tuck School of Business, or Arts & Sciences programs—the latter offering 26 departments with 56 majors. In 2018–19, Dartmouth had 8 National Merit Scholars (out of 1,715 total), 29 Goldwater Scholars (out of 315 total), 13 Fulbright Scholars (out 43 total), 5 Churchill Scholars (1 per 15 institutions nationwide), 2 Rhodes Scholars (1 per 32 institutions nationwide) , 1 Marshall Scholar (1 per 36 institutions nationwide), 94 Boren Scholarships & Fellowships (23% increase over previous year) , and 340 Truman Scholarships—more than any other college or university except Yale University.

The student body represents 46 states and 147 countries. Most students live on campus in one of 11 residence halls; six fraternity houses are located just off-campus along Webster Avenue while sorority women live in townhouses on North Park Street about 0.5 miles away from fraternities . About 60 percent of undergraduates participate in Greek life . First-year students are required to live on campus but may request an exemption if they have a close relative living within 30 miles who can house them for at least 10 weekends during their first year . Upperclassmen may apply for housing lottery exemptions that enable them to live off-campus if they meet certain criteria such as being married or having dependent children . There are also several themed residential communities such as Silsby Hall which offers substance free housing or Zuccotti Park which houses international students together regardless of their degree program .

Students engage with faculty members both inside and outside classroom settings through departmental tea parties , weekly faculty lunches where small groups discuss current events or readings over meal , mentorship programs like EMT which pairs first years with upperclassmen who serve as guides throughout their time at Dartmouth , Friday Night Suppers hosted by professors in their homes each week during winter term open to 12 randomly chosen first years , Professor for a Day program where sophomore Abbeys spend day shadowing professor whose research interests them most , Roadmaps program connecting undergrads with alumni mentors working within field they hope to pursue post graduation etc.”
