Dreams have been a topic of philosophical speculation since antiquity. The earliest recorded dreams were acquired from Mesopotamian civilization and the ancient Egyptians. The first scientific study of dreams was conducted by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century. Since then, research on dreams has increased exponentially, leading to new theories and insights about their nature and function.

Most people dream every night, though some may not remember doing so. Dreams generally last for a few seconds to a few minutes, but there are reports of dreamers experiencing entire lifetimes during a single dream episode. It is unclear exactly how long dreams last, as it is difficult to determine when one dream ends and another begins. However, it is thought that the average person spends around two hours dreaming each night.

These include falling, being chased or attacked, failing an exam or losing teeth. Dreams can also be incredibly bizarre, featuring seemingly random elements that have no connection to our waking lives.
