Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) is an academic medical center located in Durham, North Carolina. It is the flagship hospital of Duke University Health System and one of the leading hospitals in the United States. DUMC is consistently ranked among the top 10 hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and is home to many world-renowned physicians and researchers.
Duke University was founded in 1838 as Trinity College, a private liberal arts school. The Medical School was established in 1880, and Duke Hospital opened its doors in 1930. Today, DUMC comprises over 2 million square feet of space and includes Duke University Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Children’s Hospital, and the Duke Clinic.
Duke University Hospital is a 957-bed tertiary care facility that offers a full range of services including 24-hour emergency care, cancer treatment, heart surgery, organ transplantation, orthopedics, and women’s health services. In addition to its main campus in Durham, Duke University Hospital has satellite locations throughout North Carolina including WakeMed Raleigh Campus (formerly Rex Healthcare) which became part of DUMC in 2013.
Duke Raleigh Hospital is a 449-bed community hospital located just outside downtown Raleigh that provides acute care services for Wake County residents. Services include an emergency department, medical/surgical units, intensive care unit, labor & delivery unit, Mother/Baby unit as well as outpatient surgery and imaging services.
