-Food safety: Food safety is an important part of food science. This area looks at ways to prevent contamination of food during production, processing, and storage. It also looks at ways to keep food safe to eat once it reaches consumers. Food scientists work with farmers, manufacturers, retailers, and others to ensure thatfoods are safe to eat throughout the entire supply chain.

-Food spoilage: One goal offood science is to help extend the shelf lifeof perishable foods without compromising quality or safety. Food spoilage occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms grow onfoods and make them unsafe to eat. To prevent this from happening,food scientists develop packaging methods that keep oxygen out and slow down bacterial growth (such as vacuum sealing). They also research new preservatives that can be used safely in foods without affecting flavor or nutrition
