Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) is a nonprofit hospital system based in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. It is the largest healthcare provider in the Intermountain West with 22 hospitals and more than 185 clinics. IMC provides care for patients throughout Utah and Idaho as well as parts of Wyoming, Nevada, and Montana.
IMC was founded in 1975 by Dr. Spencer F. Eccles and five other physicians. The system has grown rapidly since then, adding new hospitals and clinics and expanding its services. IMC is known for its high-quality care, innovative research, and teaching programs. The organization has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospital systems in the country multiple times.
IMC’s flagship hospital is Intermountain LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, which opened in 1975. Other notable hospitals in the system include Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden (opened 1980), Intermountain Riverton Hospital near Salt Lake City (opened 1996), and Intermountain Healthcare – Logan Regional Hospital in Cache Valley (opened 1999).
The organization also operates a number of specialty hospitals including Primary Children’s Hospital – a nationally ranked children’s hospital – Huntsman Cancer Institute – one of only four NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers west of the Mississippi River -and Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City providing pediatric orthopedic care .
