An anesthetic gas, isoflurane (brand name Aneural) is used to put people to sleep during surgery or other medical procedures. Isoflurane belongs to a class of drugs called general anesthetics.

How does isoflurane work?
Isoflurane works by depressing the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord. Depressing the CNS decreases the patient’s awareness of pain and other sensations.

What are some possible side effects of isoflurane?
The most common side effect of isoflurane is nausea and vomiting. Other possible side effects include:
•Allergic reactions, including rash, hives, and itching
•Confusion
•Dizziness
•Headache
