Mathematics is the science of numbers, quantities, and shapes. It is the foundation of all other sciences. Mathematics has been developed over millennia by many different cultures. It is a universal language that can be used to describe the world around us.
The word “mathematics” comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthēma), meaning “that which is learned”. The Greek mathematician Euclid (c. 300 BCE) is considered the “father of geometry”. He wrote The Elements, a treatise on geometry that was used as a textbook for centuries. Euclidean geometry is based on axioms (self-evident truths) such as “A straight line can be drawn between any two points” and “All right angles are equal”.
Other branches of mathematics include algebra, arithmetic, calculus, and statistics. Algebra is the study of equations and variables. Arithmetic deals with numbers and their operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Calculus is the study of change and motion using concepts such as limits, derivatives, and integrals. Statistics is the study of data analysis and probability theory.
Mathematics plays an important role in our everyday lives. It helps us understand patterns in nature and make predictions about the future behaviour of systems. For example, mathematical models are used to forecast weather patterns or track the spread of diseases through populations
