Monash is a public research university in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1958, it is the second oldest university in the State of Victoria. It is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive Australian universities, and is ranked among the top 100 universities globally by several international rankings organisations.
Monash University was named after Sir John Monash, who was an outstanding scientist and doctor of sciences. He was also an Australian civil engineer and commander of the Australian Corps during World War I. In recognition of his significant contribution to education, science and engineering, Monash University was established in his name.
The main campus of Monash University is located in Clayton, about 20 kilometres from central Melbourne. The university has five other campuses across Victoria: Caulfield, Parkville, Berwick, Peninsula and Gippsland; as well as one each in Malaysia (Sunway) and South Africa (Johannesburg).
With over 75000 students enrolled across its seven campuses (as of 2019), Monash University is both the largest university in Victoria and the second largest university in Australia – behind only the much larger ‘sandstone’ universities such as Sydney or Melbourne. Student numbers have increased significantly since 2003 when there were just under 40000 enrolled students. This increase can be attributed to both domestic and international student growth; with international students now comprising around 30% – 35% of total enrolments at Monash (depending on which campus you consider). Indian students are particularly well represented among international students at Monash, making up almost 15%of all international enrolments across all campuses as per data from 2018..
