New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university in Newark, New Jersey. Founded in 1881 as Newark Technical School, it became the Newark College of Engineering in 1930 and was renamed the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1975. NJIT is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), an organization of public research universities, land-grant institutions, and state higher education officials.

As of fall 2019, NJIT offers 128 degree programs through its six schools and colleges: Newark College of Engineering, Albert Dorman Honors College, College of Architecture and Design, Ying Wu College of Computing Sciences, Martin Tuchman School of Management, and New Jersey School of Mines and Minerals. With an enrollment over 11,400 students, NJIT is the largest public university in New Jersey. It is also one of the nation’s leading polytechnic universities. U.S. News & World Report classifies NJIT as a “national university” and ranks it tied at #142 among all national universities for 2020.

NJIT Research Enterprise includes laboratories conducting cutting-edge research across various disciplines such as applied mathematics; computational biology; computer vision; cybersecurity; drug discovery; smart cities; nanotechnology; renewable energy systems including solar photovoltaics and fuel cells; transportation systems engineering; urban infrastructure planning; water resources management. According to Thomson Reuters’ Web Of Science database, NJIT faculty members published 3,291 papers between 2010–2019 which received 52,498 citations during that period resulting in an H-Index scoreof 92—placing it 8th among all public polytechnic universities in the United States. In 2015 alone, external sponsors awarded $79 million to support research at NJIT—an increase from previous years due largely to five major multi-million dollar awards from agencies such as NASA, National Science Foundation (NSF),,and United States Department Of Energy (DOE)..
