Rutgers University is a public research university in New Jersey. It is one of the nine colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution and was chartered as Queen’s College in 1766. Rutgers was selected as the State University of New Jersey by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1945, following a statewide referendum held that year. The university has three campuses: Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick/Piscataway. The university also operates several off-campus facilities such as research laboratories, a marine field station, farms, and an astronomical observatory.
Rutgers offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and 200 graduate programs through 29 schools and divisions. Rutgers is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

It is also classified as an R1 Doctoral Research University by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Rutgers is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and conference participants in the Big Ten Academic Alliance and Committee on Institutional Cooperation—the two oldest higher education consortia in North America
