Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is a world-renowned, private, not-for-profit research organization that focuses on the advancement of biomedical science and technology. TSRI has made significant contributions to the understanding of human biology and disease, and its work has led to the development of new treatments for many illnesses.

Founded in 1924 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, TSRI is headquartered in La Jolla, California. It is one of the oldest independent research institutes in the United States. TSRI’s campus spans more than 350 acres (1.4 km2) overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and it employs more than 2,500 people—including nearly 1,800 scientists—in over 60 buildings.

The institute consists of five academic departments: Chemistry, Immunology and Microbial Science, Neuroscience, Cancer Biology ,and Molecular Medicine; as well as 13 interdisciplinary centers and programs. The majority of TSRI’s funding comes from government grants and contracts (70%), with additional support coming from foundations (15%), industry partners (10%), and individual donors (5%). In 2016 Forbes ranked TSRI as one of America’s Top 25 Colleges based on “the quality of its research output.”
In 2018 Nature Index listed TSRI as 14th among global institutions for highest percentage contribution to articles published in 82 leading journals.
