The Smithsonian Institution, founded in 1846 “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge,” is a group of museums and research centers administered by the United States government. The institution is named after its founder, British scientist James Smithson (1765-1829).

The Smithsonian’s collections are among the largest and most diverse in the world and represent America’s history, art, culture, and science. Visitors can explore everything from the origins of life on Earth to contemporary art at one of the Smithsonian’s many museums or research facilities.

The Smithsonian Institution is headquartered in Washington, D.C., but its reach extends far beyond the nation’s capital. The institution comprises 19 museums and galleries, as well as 9 zoos and aquariums, 20 research centers, and 2 historical sites. More than 28 million people from all over the world visit a Smithsonian museum each year.

Smithsonian scientists are leaders in their fields—exploring evolution, studying climate change, safeguarding endangered species, developing new technologies, cataloging biodiversity, deciphering ancient manuscripts, chronicling American history through artifacts…and so much more.

Through its exhibitions, educational programs, publications ,and digital resources ,the Smithsonian shares its vast resources with millions of people every day—inspiring curiosity , discovery ,and lifelong learning .
