The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is one of India’s premier institutions for advanced scientific research and education. TIFR is located in Mumbai, and its main campus is situated at Colaba. It was founded in 1945 by Indian scientist Homi Bhabha, with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, as a center for scientific research in Atomic Energy. The institute has since expanded its activities to include other areas of basic science such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.

TIFR has been ranked among the top 100 institutes globally in various surveys over the years. It has been particularly strong in Mathematics and Physics, with several TIFR scientists winning prestigious awards such as the Fields Medal and the Nobel Prize. The institute also offers Ph.D., integrated Ph.D., and Master’s programs in all its major departments.

In addition to its main campus at Mumbai, TIFR also has campuses at Pune and Hyderabad. Its Mumbai campus houses several important national facilities such as India’s largest supercomputing facility – the Param Shivay supercomputer – and the 30-meter Himalayan Chandra Telescope Array (HCTA). TIFR is also home to a number of world-renowned research centers such as the Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS), Theoretical Astrophysics Group (TAG) and Biological Sciences Division (BSD).

The institute attracts some of the best scientific talent from across India and abroad, making it one of the leading lights of Indian science.
