Temple University Health System, also known as TUHS, is a large health system located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is made up of several hospitals and health care facilities, including Temple University Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Jeanes Hospital, and Episcopal Campus. TUHS provides both primary and tertiary care to patients in the Philadelphia area.
TUHS was founded in 1892 as the Philadelphia Polyclinic and College for Graduates in Medicine. The institution was created with the merger of two preexisting schools: the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Philadelphia and the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1901, Temple University took over management of the school, which became known as Temple University School of Medicine. In 1963, TUHS became a state-related institution after receiving partial funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The health system has grown significantly since its inception. In addition to its hospitals and clinics, TUHS now includes a college of pharmacy, a college of public health, a school of podiatry, and various research institutes. TUHS is one of the largest employers in Philadelphia; it had over 9800 employees as of 2015. The health system offers a wide range of services to its patients, including primary care, cancer treatment, cardiology care, orthopedics care, women’s health services, and more.
