UC Berkeley, also known as UCB, is a public research university in Berkeley, California. It was founded in 1868 and is the flagship campus of the University of California system. With over 35,000 students, it is the largest university in the San Francisco Bay Area and the third-largest in California. UC Berkeley is considered one of the 14 Public Ivy League schools.
The university occupies 1,232 acres (4.97 km2) on a hilly landscape overlooking San Francisco Bay and has 3,739 faculty members teaching a wide range of subjects. The main campus includes 170 buildings with a central quadrangle occupying 22 acres (89,000 m2). The athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears and compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Pac-12 Conference.
