University of California is a public research university system in the US state of California. The University of California was founded on March 23, 1868, and its flagship campus — UC Berkeley — was established in 1873. The University of California is the world’s leading public research university system, with 10 campuses, 5 medical centers, 3 national laboratories, and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program. The University of California has an annual budget of over $32 billion and conducts nearly two-thirds of all basic research conducted at public universities in the US.

The University of California is renowned for its academic excellence and groundbreaking research. UC faculty members and alumni have won 110 Nobel Prizes (more than any other university), including 20 in the last decade alone. In addition, UC students have won more Rhodes Scholarships than any other university in the country. The University of California is also home to some of the world’s top scientific facilities, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
