The University of Delaware (UD) is a large, public research university in Newark, Delaware. Founded in 1743 as a small private college, UD has grown into a comprehensive university with seven colleges and three schools offering more than 145 undergraduate majors and minors and 140 graduate programs. The main campus covers more than 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) in Newark’s University Heights neighborhood with additional campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown. UD is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity.”

UD offers study abroad opportunities through the Center for International Education which administers education abroad programs in more than 50 countries on all continents. Programs range from one-week faculty-led trips to semester or year-long exchanges and full degree programs. Approximately 1,600 students participate annually. The International Student & Scholar Services office provides services and programming for the university’s nearly 3,500 international students representing over 100 countries. UD ranks 16th internationally among American universities for the number of undergraduate students who study abroad.

The university is organized into seven colleges: College of Agriculture & Natural Resources; Bob Carpenter Sports Complex; College of Arts & Sciences; Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics; College of Earth, Ocean & Environment; College of Education & Human Development; and College of Engineering. In addition there are three schools: School of Law; School of Marine Science & Policy; and an Honors Program. Each college/school has its own dean who reports directly to the provost—the chief academic officer at UD. The current provost is Domenico Grasso who was appointed on July 1st 2017 after serving as Dean of engineering at Northeastern University since 2009
