The University of Hyderabad (UoH), located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India is one of the premier central universities in the country. Established in 1974 as a residential university with a campus spread over 2,300 acres (9.3 km2), it is one of the largest universities in India. It has more than 4,500 faculty and staff members and about 5,200 students on its rolls. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through its Schools and Centres of study. It also offers research facilities to scholars from India and abroad. The University of Hyderabad was established as a Central University under The Universities Act, 1973 by an act of parliament on 2nd October 1974. It was inaugurated on 3rd August 1976 by Giani Zail Singh former President Of India at Osmania Stadium Hyderabad which is now part of our Campus . Professor Ved Prakash was appointed as first Vice-Chancellor and Professors Ajoy Kumar Roy Choudhury & Ramakrishna Ramaswamy were appointed as first Dean & Registrar respectively.

The idea of setting up a central university at Hyderabad was first mooted by Late Sri Sanjay Gandhi during his visit to Osmania University campus on 14 March 1971 but it took almost three years for the then Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi to turn the dream into reality when she laid the foundation stone for this great institution on 22 December 1972. The bill for establishing Central University at Hyderabad was introduced in Lok Sabha by Mr Loknath Mishra ,Minister Of Education Govt Of India On 19 July 1974 and after passing through both houses i.e., Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha it received Presidential assent on 1 September 1974

Prof CNR Rao ,the world renowned scientist who hails from Andhra Pradesh played an important role along with few other scientists in convincing Indira Gandhi ji about setting up this great institution which would help not just Telangana region but entire South India .It’s noteworthy that except IIT Kharagpur all other IITs are located either in Northern or Western part of our country so there was definitely a need for an institution like UoH which can attract bright minds from entire South Indian states . Notable alumni’s include : Srinivasa Kalyanam(co-founder Mercari Inc.),Karan Bajwa(MD IBM), Kiran Mazumdar Shaw(chairperson Biocon Ltd.),Chanda Kochhar(former MD ICICI bank)etc,.
