Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) is a world-renowned academic medical center located in Chicago, Illinois. RUMC is home to some of the world’s leading experts in all fields of medicine and surgery, and provides state-of-the-art patient care. RUMC has been at the forefront of medical research and education for over 150 years, and continues to be a pioneer in both areas today.

RUMC was founded in 1837 as Rush Medical College, one of the first medical schools in the Midwest. The school was named after Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of the most influential physicians of his time. In 1942, RUMC became affiliated with Presbyterian Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital), forming what is now known as “The Alliance” – two renowned institutions working together to provide outstanding patient care and cutting-edge research. In 1969, RUMC opened its doors to women students for the first time; today, over half of our students are women.

RUMC offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs in all areas of medicine and surgery. Our faculty includes Nobel laureates, MacArthur “genius grant” recipients, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, members of the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine, and many other distinguished scholars and clinicians. We are also home to six hospitals – three adult hospitals (including our flagship hospital on Chicago’s Near West Side), one children’s hospital (Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago), one psychiatric hospital (John H Stroger Jr Hospital), and one rehabilitation hospital ( Shirley Ryan AbilityLab).

Our commitment to excellence extends beyond our walls: we are actively involved in improving health care at both the local and global level through our many community outreach initiatives. For example, our Street Medicine program brings health care directly to those who need it most – homeless individuals living on the streets or in shelters – by providing basic medical care, referrals for specialty services ,and access to social services . We also have robust international programs that provide training for health care providers around the world so they can return to their countries armed with new knowledge and skills to improve health care delivery in their own communities . Through these efforts –and many others– we strive every day to make a difference not just within our walls but out in the larger community as well
