The University of Connecticut (UConn) is a public research university in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School and became a land-grant college in 1893. The university comprises four campuses: the main campus in Storrs, two regional campuses in Hartford and Stamford, and a branch campus in Avery Point. The institution is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”.
As of 2019, UConn has been ranked as the best public university in New England by U.S. News & World Report and is tied for 45th place overall among all national universities. The university has been recognized as one of the “Public Ivies,” meaning that it provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price. According to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, UConn ranks 4th among American colleges and universities for value of its degree; starting salaries for alumni are among the highest of any college graduate nationally at $57,600 per year on average. In athletics, UConn is primarily members of the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference for most sports since 2013, previously being members of Conference USA (1999–2004), Big East Conference (1991–2013), and Atlantic 10 Conference (1985–1990).
The University Of Connecticut was chartered as a Land Grant College on May 3rd 1881 by Governor Robert E. Pattison with guidance from Yale president Theodore Dwight Woolsey and Harvard president Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., making it one of only three schools established under the Morrill Act preceding Lincoln’s assassination later that month; Purdue University and Michigan State University were also established under this act during this time period..
