Founded in 1968, the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is a public university located in Spain with campuses in the three provinces of the Basque Country: Biscay, Gipuzkoa and Álava. It has over 46,000 students and 3,200 teaching and research staff. The UPV/EHU is one of Spain’s leading universities and is ranked within the top 500 universities worldwide.
The University of the Basque Country was established as an autonomous institution under Spanish law on 20 October 1968. The UPV/EHU is composed of seven faculties located across its three campuses, which offer a total of 78 degree programs. The university also has 17 associated schools offering a further 36 degrees. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the UPV/EHU plays an important role in promoting culture and language in the Basque Country through its Etxepare Institute for Basque Language Research & Policymaking.
The main campus of the UPV/EHU is located in Leioa, Biscay, on the outskirts of Bilbao. Other campuses are located in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava) and San Sebastián (Gipuzkoa). TheUPV/EHU also has several facilities outside of the Basque Autonomous Community, including satellite campuses in Madrid and Pamplona (Navarre) as well as research centers in Barcelona, Valencia and Zaragoza.
