Karolinska Institutet (KI) is a world-renowned medical university located in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded in 1810, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in Europe. KI is affiliated with Karolinska University Hospital, which ranks as one of the best hospitals in Scandinavia and Europe. The university comprises eight faculties: medicine, dentistry, public health sciences, biochemistry and cell biology, pharmaceutical sciences, neuroscience, physiology and developmental biology. Around 6200 students are enrolled at KI each year from over 100 countries.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Since 1901, 87 Nobel Laureates have been affiliated with KI as either students or staff members. KI has also produced numerous other notable alumni including several Prime Ministers of Sweden and many prominent scientists and doctors.

Research conducted at KI covers a wide range of topics within medicine and healthcare. Areas of focus include cancer, cardiovascular disease, infection biology, neurodegenerative diseases, obesity and diabetes. The university has strong links to the biotech industry as well as clinical research institutes such as the Swedish Medical Research Council (VR) and the Karolinska University Hospital Research Unit (KUH). This close relationship between academia and industry allows for rapid translation of findings from basic scientific research into new treatments and therapies for patients.
