The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is an American public research university located in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana, Illinois. Founded in 1867 as a land-grant institution, UIUC is the flagship campus of the University of Illinois system. The University comprises 17 colleges that offer more than 150 programs of study.
As a world-class research university, UIUC attracts top scholars to its faculty and staff. The University is home to 41 Nobel laureates, 22 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 20 MacArthur Fellows. In addition, UIUC has produced 14 Rhodes Scholars and 12 Marshall Scholars. Notable alumni include filmmaker Roger Ebert, author Kurt Vonnegut Jr., inventor Ray Kurzweil, and president Barack Obama.
UIUC’s 1,783 acres (722 ha) campus is divided into North Campus and South Campus by Wright Street. North Campus houses the Colleges of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences; Applied Health Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering; Information Sciences; Law; Liberal Arts & Sciences; Media; Social Work; and Veterinary Medicine. South Campus includes the Schools of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Architecture & Urban Planning, Art & Design, Business Administration , Computer Science , Continuing Education , Labor & Industrial Relations , Library & Information Science , Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences , Nursing Social Service Administration . In total there are over 200 buildings on campus.
