Uppsala University (Swedish: Uppsala universitet) is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden, and is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. Founded in 1477, it ranks among the world’s 100 best universities according to Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and the League of European Research Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,400 doctoral students. It offers programs leading to Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, PhD degrees and medical degrees.
The main campus is located on Dag Hammarskjölds väg 1 in central Uppsala, with several smaller campuses scattered around town. The university hall originally stood on where today’s Old Main Building stands; as was customary at that time for most universities in Europe it has since relocated several times before settling down at its present location next to Ultuna Chapel north-east of central Uppsala; see below map for locations beyond central Uppsala.
