The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMTC) is a public research university in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses are approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) apart, and the St. Paul campus is actually in neighboring Falcon Heights. It is the oldest and largest campus within the University of Minnesota system, and has the sixth-largest main campus student body in the United States, with 51,721 students in 2019–20. It is also one of the nation’s top research universities, generating $1.03 billion in sponsored research each year as of 2019.

The university was founded in 1851 as a preparatory school for frontier settlers moving westward from Michigan Territory following the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux that opened up parts of what is now southern Minnesota to settlement by U.S citizens; it was later chartered as an official state institution on February 25th 1858 by President James Buchanan.. The school slowly expanded over time until 1888 when it officially became a land-grant university under the Morrill Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln.. In its formative years most students were enrolled in liberal arts programs but this changed over time as professional schools such as law and medicine were established.. Today there are eleven colleges within the University Of Minnesota including: agriculture; food; environment; natural resources; design; housing; apparel; textiles & science;; dentistry;; education;; engineering & architecture;; information sciences & technology management;; kinesiology & recreation management;; law;;;; medicine pharmacy,, public health,, nursing,, social work,, veterinary medicine.; biomedical engineering etc…

In terms of rankings UMTC consistently ranks highly compared to other large US universities.. In 2021 it was ranked 46th best national university by US News And World Report while Forbes magazine ranked it 55th among all American public colleges and universities.. On a global scale Times Higher Education ranked UMTC 146th among all institutions worldwide for 2020 while Quacquarelli Symonds placed even higher at 139th globally for their 2021 rankings…
